New York – May 10, 2010 – On May 6th, Christie’s concluded the first ever GREEN AUCTION: A Bid to Save the Earth. The live auction, which took place on April 22nd, 2010, and the accompanying silent auction which ran from April 8th through May 6, 2010 on charitybuzz.com, and raised a remarkable $2.4 million.

All proceeds from the $2.4 million will go directly to the four highly acclaimed beneficiary NGO’s including: Natural Resources Defense Council, Oceana, Central Park Conservancy and Conservation International. Christie’s waived all its fees and commissions for this event.

Ed Dolman, CEO, Christie's stated: “I think it is important for Christie’s to engage on an ongoing basis with the issue of climate change. Our way was to put together this innovative Green Auction, and we are very pleased with the results.”

With “A Bid to Save the Earth,” Christie’s facilitated an unprecedented collaboration between significant figures from a great range of industries, enlisting the participation of the philanthropic, environmental, business and cultural communities.

The live auction was co-chaired by David and Susan Rockefeller. The top lot of the night was All You Need is Jealousy by Damien Hirst, which realized $92,000. Mr. Hirst summed up his participation in the Green Auction by saying that it was: ‘A worthy cause that I couldn’t say no to’.

Other works that were included in the live auction included works by Keith Tyson, Subodh Gupta, Kenny Scharf, David La Chapelle, Olafur Eliasson, Jenny Holzer, Zeng FanZhi, Steven Sebring and Matthew Ritchie. The live auction also featured once in a lifetime experiences, such as a round of Golf with President Bill Clinton, a Los Angeles package which included two tickets to the Vanity Fair Oscar Party and a fitting with Giorgio Armani.

The auction was led by Christie’s globally renowned auctioneer Christopher Burge. Chevy Chase was the Master of Ceremonies. The star-studded event included guests including Salma Hayek, Sam Waterston, Ted Danson, Candice Bergen, Brian Williams, John McEnroe, Elettra Wiedemann, Joyce Varvatos, Rogan Gregory, Al Roker, Ann Curry, Matt Lauer, Natalie Morales, Kelly Cutrone, Cornelia Guest, Doutzen Kroes, Derek Blasberg, Willie Garson, Miranda Kerr and more.

The Silent Auction, powered by charitybuzz, was open to bidders worldwide from April 8th through May 6th. The top selling lot was Rolling Stones, Broken Record by Mr. Brainwash, which realized $105,000.

Christie’s Media Partner for the event was NBCU’s ‘Green is Universal’ and the lead sponsor of the event was DB Climate Change Advisors (DBCCA), the climate change investment and research business of Deutsche Bank’s Asset Management business. Last year, DBCCA unveiled the Carbon Counter – the world’s first scientifically valid, real-time carbon counter, a nearly 70-foot-tall digital billboard displaying the running total of long-lived greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The clock is located outside of Madison Square Garden/Penn Station. The proceeds from DBCCA's sponsorship will directly benefit the four not-for-profit organizations. Barneys New York partnered with organic clothing company Loomstate to create a beautiful limited edition $40.00 T-shirt to raise money for the campaign under the 1% For the Earth campaign.
